A memorable Christmas
There was one Christmas where my ex husband had been demoted from a salaried managerial job to a hourly employee. ($5.50 an hr in Dec 1984) In Sept 1984, we "thought" we were on top of the world. We had just gave birth to our 3rd son - had a new car - and we could actually afford things! It was a big blow to us, not only financially but emotionally as well.
That year, we bought a little tree at a lot. Can't remember what we paid for it but we had to place it on a trunk and it was still little. We placed it in the corner of our dining room. Our little kids at the time, didn't care, that it was this huge, towering tree. It had lights and to them it represented HOPE.
Fortunately, I had done a little toy Christmas shopping before my husband lost his job so they each had a main gift.So that wasn't the issue. We had to pay the rent so we had to make some food cuts as well as cut down on the heating. We burned in our fireplace and tried to use only that and I would bake a lot, to warm the house. The children didn't know any difference really - it was my husband and I, who felt awful, we felt cold and was just plain down! On Christmas Eve, we took a drive around town and looked at the lights. We had tomato soup and soda-crackers for dinner and Jiffy blueberry muffins for dessert. Fortunately for Christmas Day, we were going to my parents home for dinner!
I might have "thought" I was miserable - but when I look back, it was one of the most memorable Christmas memories I have.
