Rain, fire updates, surgery, and the gardeners

It rained all day yesterday. Not a heavy rain; more like steady sprinkles or drizzle - it lowered the temps quite a bit. Our high was 72. It felt so nice. Rain was heavier in the mountains which is where the fires are. The 90-degree heat will be back this week. At least it's not triple digits! We still have smoke.

Here are fire sizes and containment percentages as of today.

1. Antelope Fire in Siskiyou County: 145,653 acres, 88% contained.

2.Caldor Fire in El Dorado County: 218,876 acres, 71% contained. This fire is the 15th largest fire in California's history.

3. Dixie Fire in Plumas, Butte, Tehama, Lassen, and Shasta counties: 963,301 acres and 88% contained. This fire is the second-largest in the state's history.

4. McCash Fire in Klamath National Forest: 84,471 acres, 22% contained. McFarland Fire in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest: The blaze is 100% contained at 122,653 acres.

5. Monument Fire in Trinity County: 218,457 acres, 53% contained. This fire is the 16th largest fire in California's history.

6. River Complex in Klamath National Forest: 195,779 acres, 45% contained. This fire is the 19th largest fire in the state's history.

We've been affected by the smoke from all of the above fires except the Caldor fire in El Dorado which is south of us. The Dixie fire has been stubborn and the Monument fire in Trinity county (near Weaverville) has also been a stubborn sneaky fire. Containment does not mean the fire is out. But it is a good indication that they are in better control of getting it out. Most importantly we don't need any wind events. Not even a breeze.

The garden is history

The husband hired some gardeners to help out with our yards - while he tends to the tent trailer rehab. (he's signed back on) They came out yesterday and cut down a lot of bushes; some that I am allergic to. Shaped up the cedar trees and the gum trees. It does look bare - I can now see the street and my neighbor's driveway. It had to be done, regardless if I like it 100% or not. I like mature landscapes. for privacy.  They are back today finishing up. It was a big job.

Yesterday the Doctors office called to schedule my surgery date - Monday, Nov. 29. Oh, fun. It does give me a bit more time to prepare.

  1. Wow, I know the fires were bad, but never realized how bad they were until you posted the sizes.

Glad that your Hubby is back working on the tent trailer.

    God bless.

    1. Yeah we're up to almost 2 million acres total this summer with most of that within our area - no wonder we have been smoked out.

  2. I sure am praying they get those fires put out soon. It was on the news this morning that some of the Sequoias are in danger. Noooooo! Seeing them is on my bucket list. They can't burn!

    1. Yep they are wrapping them in that fire blanket. Our fire back in 2019, in my town, they used those fire retardant wraps to literally wrap the historic buildings and they saved them from the inferno.

I am sure they are doing whatever is humanly possible to save them.

  3. That's wonderful on the rain! Hurray! I hope y'all continue to get that and the temp's drop. Next year should be better with there being nothing left to burn (well, there's always an upside, right?!).
And I'm glad you've finally been given a surgery date. Back in 2011-2012 when I had so much surgery, I had to wait a long time to get in too. It does help to be prepared.
    Prayers for a speedy recovery.
    Blessings. xx

    1. California has millions of acres of land, still untouched by fires. Moist of that here in Northern California surrounding me. But yes, little by little it will burn.

I could have gotten in sooner but he graciously worked it around my cataract surgery.

  4. Wow! I hope they get all those fires out soon! Does 100% contained mean the fire is out or is just contained to one area?

    1. Contained to one area/perimeter so the fire behavior is unable to threaten outside the perimeter; like towns etc.

  6. It's good to hear the big fires are contained more. They gave us all a scare.
We had smoky days, but it's been pretty clear lately. That sunflower photo
is pretty. I think sunflowers are lovely even when they are dried or drooping
    from the heat.
