The weekend

We've gone from 102 down to 67. Rain is sitting off the coast but they say, we won't see any of it here in the valley - just the coast and mountains.

I can't say I am that disappointed. In fact, I am loving the cooler temps - it's not overcast, just lightly cloudy.

There have been some Memorial Days that have been just TOO HOT.

I'm sure it bums out some of the many people, getting their campers ready for a 3 day weekend in the mountains or on the coast. I hope they bring raincoats.

We'll be going to a Strawberry Festival tomorrow, Lord willing. The festival has been cancelled for the last 2 years - so it should be wonderful to see it again.

Sunday after church, we hope to drive up to McCloud for the annual Mushroom Festival. That too, has been shut down the last 2 years.

And then of course on Monday, we always observe Memorial Day by visiting the Veterans cemetery. I've always done this for years -

I used to take my kids with me to visit my neighbor friend at Golden Gate National cemetery. He died in Vietnam and it still effects me. I will never forget him. He died on July 3. So both Memorial Day and July 3 and 4th, I think of him very strongly.

We were in our yard, when we saw the dark sedan with marines, drive by our house slowly.  It was the 4th of July. All the neighbors just knew and stood by. Then we heard his Mom, yell out the most blood curdling scream I have ever heard and to this day I can still hear it.

I sure am thankful for beautiful flowers -
especially when I think back on these hard memories.

I'll be happy when we get out of May. It just seemed like such a LONG month. We had many costly extra expenses this past month - we paid it all in cash and took nothing out of our savings - but it's tight this last week. I went to the store and spent $22 - I was in and out. Oh we're fine, and it probably does us good to tuck in the belt a little when we need to. We actually haven't had to do this in many years. Plus I have a good stock pile of groceries. The only thing I am missing is chocolate! I'm craving it something fierce.

I'm starting to get out my patriotic stuff - I usually keep it all up till August.

Doesn't it seem, the year is flying by?
In little over 6 months it will be Christmas again.

I better get back to work - I'm washing my rugs, and then I will clean the wood floors and vacuum the carpet.

So what are your plans for this 3-day weekend?

  1. Wow, you are ambitious! Washing rugs, floors, carpet, etc. Good for you. I need som extra energy to keep up. Yes, I keep up some patriotic stuff all summer too. Not a lot, but mostly the front door. We will have a Memorial Day picnic at our church on Monday. We will have a service on Sunday to honor our fallen heroes. We had some good rain today, which we really needed. I hope we are getting into our summer rainy season so I can quit having to water the plants outside so much. We have to pay for our water bill, and I hate to use too much water as it is expensive. Yes, the year is flying by too quickly. But then again, I'll be happy when fall gets here and it cools down a bit. Summers are brutal here too. Take care and have a blessed weekend.

    1. Yeah we have to water our lawns throughout the summer. We have a sprinkler system that goes off - we're on a water rationing plan so we have to abide in that. Even though we are rationing, the bill still goes up. Like everything does these days.

  2. Yes, this year is really flying!
Such a sad memory. I remember camping when I was young and a young boy drowned. His mother also screamed, and although I was young, I still remember that sound.

    1. I was like 10 years old - he was the big brother of my best friends who were twins. He was always so nice to me.

  3. What lovely purple flowers. When it gets too hot for you, send some of the extra up here please. I am so tired of rain and cold temperatures.

    God bless.

  6. Oh, a strawberry festival sounds fun. I totally missed out on our strawberry season this year. Didn't pick and eat even one fresh delicious strawberry. How very sad to read about your neighbor who died in Vietnam. Yes, the year is going by way too fast!
