Camping - tents, van, motorhomes, mining claims.

It's another HOT (102)  DRY (14% H) day here in the Golden State.
Supposed to hit 104 in a couple of hours.

The husband is outside with Laydee, doing what he always does. The heat does not bother him at all - he tells me he is part lizard and I believe him. The husband and Foodie enjoyed their backpacking couple of days - where it was comfortable in the mid 70's for daytime highs. That sounds so good to me.

I like to tent camp but not in the heat. Only if we go up into the higher elevations where it is cooler. Now that the tent trailer is now gone - it is strictly...

tent camping...

We usually do not go to campgrounds. We go way up, and away from people. or go to the Bureau of Land Management, where you have acres of land you can camp on for free. Same with some Forest land. You do have to get a fire permit. One drawback - no running water, showers, or toilets.

It's doable for a couple of days...

Sleeping in the van, which we have done before - take out the seats, put in a double-size mattress and we're good to go. This was in the Autumn - I wouldn't attempt it at all in the summer.

Now years ago,  we had 3 different sizes of motorhomes (at different times) 18 ft, 30 ft, and a 34-footer.  They were always packed and ready to go.

From tents to motorhomes and sleeping in the van. All different experiences and all fun although I do believe I am partial to tents. That's real camping to me.

Now, this is a cabin on a gold mining claim that belongs to my friend - we camp on their claim in our tent and they also have an old trailer they keep up there, as the cook-house.

The old cook-house trailer.

The gold claim has been in her family since the late 1880s and has been passed down through her family.

We've checked into getting a mining claim - but it's hard to get into because of most of them remain in their families, getting passed down through the generations.

Up until covid, we would all go camping together as a family. Each staking out our own tent space.

Good times. Good memories.  This beautiful area near Burney is pretty much burned out now.

PS - it is now 108 - 11% H. Feels like…108 degrees.

  1. Sounds like a grand time. I couldn't do without running water, showers, or toilets though. Then again, I've never done real camping before. For me, it's got to be a cozy cabin with a fireplace, swing on the porch, and a fire pit for making s'mores. So glad you made some wonderful memories.

  2. We used to put up a tent in the back yard on the farm - it stayed up most of the summer. As kids we loved sleeping out there because we could stay up late, though I'm pretty sure we fell asleep earlier than we thought.
Mom bought a tent trailer when I was a teenager and they used that at the lake. I went a few times when my daughter was small.
I must admit, I'm not much of camper. It seems a lot of work to pack up the stuff you need. Or perhaps I'm just lazy. :)

    1. We used to do that for our boys too. I haven’t camped for the last 3 years which makes me 3 years older. I’m hoping to go soon.

    1. I won’t camp here in the valley during summer. It would be coastal or the mountains

  4. Dearest Debby,
Wow, you got right now only 8% humidity versus 30% for us here in Georgia.
It was hot for biking but we managed.
Wish we had shaded routes like you find in The Netherlands, mainly because streets are a lot more narrow and not such a wide section alongside the road where no trees are...
But sure happy we did go and managed to get our miles and exercise!
Wow, you did a lot of camping but right now I sure would not like to do that, guess it would cause lots of back problems.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  5. I love camping, but not without running water and electricity! My husband and son always liked to go tenting in the state forests.

    1. My dad taught me how to rough it. I once went 1 week without a proper hair wash and shower! It was miserable but I did have fun. We pack in our own water. I haven’t roughed it like that in years.

  6. We've gone full circle with camping: started out tenting, then when we had three kids bought a little Coleman pop-up. After #6 was born, a 35 ft trailer to pull with the 15 passenger van. Now, we're back to tents again, thinking of getting a small camper. Only four kids at home now of the 16, this past weekend we went all by ourselves, husband and I, tenting. Our temps are very moderate, high in the high eighties to maybe ninety, but very humid. Shh, I'm a wimpy camper. I might sleep in a tent, but I like walking to the real bathroom with the showers, although we did have an after sunset swim in Lake Ontario
with the bar of soap last evening, it was lovely.

    1. Oh yes, I’ve done that too - washing in lake with biodegradable soap.

  7. I remember those camp-outs when the kids were small. No showers or toilets, and all there was was the woods around us. I like your friend's little cabin house, it's so charming. Glad to hear your husband and son had a good time backpacking. Now, I live in the woods, with a huge front and back yard, and can camp out anytime. Never thought I'd be living like this, but here I am. ; )

    1. You’re living a good life, Sheri. If we weren’t living here, we’d be living in the mountains here in Shasta County because that’s where my sons are.

  8. Camping has never been my thing. Too much work. :) We had an RV and that is the kind of camping I like. We traveled all over the states.

  9. I really miss our tent trailer, bit too old for tenting now. We used to haul the trailer to an area that was relatively quiet (hard to find here) and I would spend weeks in solitude. Now we rent a cabin somewhere and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Love the fact you still go tenting.

    God bless.

    1. Renting a cabin is nice to but is starting to be too expensive here in California.

  11. We've done the whole camping thing...trailer, tent/trailer, tent, and whatever else there might be. We ended up going back to tent camping for a couple of years....but NEVER would make it with no water, bathrooms or showers! nope, no pooping in the woods for me. We usually went to a State campground located at a beach. Living in Michigan was great, because there was always a beach somewhere!! Then....we moved to the lakehouse!! Best idea ever!! while the kids were younger, and the grandkids were little. Once everyone grew up...the fairytale ended. xxoo

    1. Gosh one time about 6 years ago, we went into the back country and my husband and sons had to dig a hole. I did not like that at all. Lol

  12. Vacations for me growing up were always camping. Two weeks at Hirtz Bay Campground at Lake Shasta. Sleeping in a tent and on the water every day swimming and skiing. About the time I hit Junior High my folks bought a camper and we started venturing out to other places and states including some BLM spots.
I started tent camping again about 30 years ago with friends and we have two planned weekend trips each summer. 5 years ago I bought a small 12 ft. trailer, I just wanted a bed and toilet, we still do all the cooking, eating and enjoying the outdoors just getting older and wanted a bit of comfort. lol.
I just got back from 9 days camping with my brothers, sister in laws, niece and nephews at Black Butte Lake. Hot and sometimes windy but spent a good deal of the time in the lake to stay cool.
