Laying Low

The last day of June

While cleaning the back room (still) I came across some old handkerchiefs that belonged to my Grandma and her mother.

Back then all girls and women, embroidered and tatted - they would purchase a regular cotton handkerchief and then put on their own border, and embroidery.

I had washed them, due to the fragility of the cotton.

I like to handwash, special vintage linens and iron them - then I put them away.

When I iron these, I'll do some close-up photos of the handiwork.

Big sunflower -

I can't wait for it to flower. Already taller than me; I'm 5'4.

I'd say it is 6ft. I can't see if there is a flower forming yet.

For the last couple of days, I have been sorting through the boxes of "stuff" and photographs.

"I'll put this there and that over here."

Soon I will be able to start being creative once again. So much to do - and I will enjoy every minute of it.

I was able to load up 1 big box of clothing for donation - and we also loaded up 2 boxes of food to take to the Good News Rescue Mission.

We drove downtown to get our monthly gas.

Only spent $20 for the month on the car. I'm not counting the van this month because Foodie and the husband used it and Foodie helped with the gas.

Since we do not have a big freezer anymore, and I need the room, I will grill one bag of the frozen chicken breasts. I'm thinking 3 good meals. Tonight I'll make a pasta salad with the BBQ chicken - Tomorrow I will break down the cooked chicken and we'll have a nice salad with chicken in it. The next meal will be chicken enchiladas.

Funny - the Vet wanted a urine sample from Laydee. We've done the stool samples but a urine sample isn't easy. She gave us a little tray to slip under her when she starts to pee. BUT Laydee didn't like that, so she stopped and we got nothing. She outsmarted us all day, yesterday.

Finally this morning, the husband tried again and eureka, he got some! That was a first for both of us. Usually, they take a sample at the vet. She is doing incredibly well. We'll find out on the evening of the 4th of July if her anti-anxiety works.

So that's about it from over here -

It's so much cooler today - 93 degrees 13 H.

Still hot but not god-awful.

    1. Sadly I am the only one in my family (I have all sons) who care about things like hankies...

  2. OH, those cotton handkerchiefs are so beautiful! I can't wait to see them all ironed. What treasures! They look like very big hankies! I don't have any that large. I love that they are hand embroidered. Really special treasures. That sunflower will be amazing too. Be sure to get a picture when it blooms! Glad you were finally able to get the urine sample from Laydee. That sounds like it was definitely a challenge. Hope she is feeling better. I enjoyed your post. You are keeping busy with nice projects. Glad it "cooled down". 93 is hot, but yes, it's that hot here too most days right now, with high humidity. I can't wait for fall. Take care and God bless.

  3. Beautiful photos. The embroidery is so lovely. It must have taken a lot of time. I imagine your grandmother sitting sweetly and quietly, without a worry in the world, sewing those. It seems the days were simpler then.

    1. Yes I do think of the time. They were so proficient at needlework back then. I also think of the many tears and noses that were wiped.

  4. Dearest Debby,
Sweet photos with the vintage hankies line drying.
My friend Ellie in The Netherlands uses that Rotary Clothes dryer that I've never seen here. You can see what it looks like in this video: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/375980268895476022/
We only use our dryer here and I have a special Leifheit Rollquick 210 Lingline Wallmounted in our laundry room: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/375980268903123614/
Never saw it here in the USA, only in Australia and the UK.
Fresh wind dried linens are so good.
Good luck with sorting through all your things, it can bring joy at times but it is an armload of work.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. I have a portable dryer I purchased at IKEA for small things. They just looked pretty on the clothes line. With our heat, it only took 10 minutes for them all to dry.

  5. I remember my mum boiling huge tubs of soiled hankies on the hob. I bet she was pleased when hankies were superseded by throwaway tissues. Those hankies in your photo are beautiful.

    1. Thank you. Since I'm the only one left, I inherited all the hankies from all my female ancestors. From Grandmas, to Aunties.

    1. Yes, so did I. I even was married and had a wedding handkerchief that I held along with my wedding bouquet.

  8. The handkerchiefs are so pretty. I have a few tucked away from my grandmother.
I cannot even imagine trying to get a urine sample from a cat! Ours always jumped out of the liter box if we even came in the room when they were in it.
