I always enjoy the month of July

Pulled the carrots up from the ground this morning - they taste so good.
I've never grown carrots before.

When you really think about the amount of water used to grow these carrots -  it just isn't worth it, I won't be growing carrots again.

When you are gardening, these are things you need to consider.

Or in my case, reconsider.

Since Susie LOVES the greens from the carrot tops, I cut them off, stuck them in an empty salt shaker - and placed it in her garden window over the kitchen sink.

I had to use up some zucchini - so I baked 2 loaves of bread this afternoon. It just came out of the oven. It smells so good.

So what are your 4th of July plans?

It really does depend, on the illegal fireworks going off. We won't leave our dog with all of that going on.

I'll be binge-watching the miniseries, John Adams -
Since the miniseries came out in 2008, I have tried to watch it every 4th of July. I finally just bought it. It's a keeper.

July

When the scarlet cardinal tells
Her dream to the dragon fly,
And the lazy breeze makes a nest in the trees,
And murmurs a lullaby...It is July.

  1. Dearest Debby,
Yes, all the fireworks do cause a lot of stress on our animals and one wonders how in the world do people have $$$ for that?!
You are so right about not growing vegetables as we ought to always consider that all veggies contain some 92% water and it needs to come from somewhere in order to get inside.
We have given up on veggies decades ago. Without any spent mushroom compost for improving the water holding capacity of the soil, it is impossible. All the rain runs off and never manages to penetrate the Georgia clay...
Also the amount of work; it is just not worth it!
Your Zucchini Bread looks magazine worthy! No doubt its smell is good.
Happy 4th of July to you and yours and hoping that your fur babies will be fine and also hoping that the results from the vet will be good!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  2. Your carrots look great.
John Adams is a great series. I have the book by David McCullough which I have yet to read.
I can almost smell the zucchini bread.
    No plans here for us.

  3. Your zucchini bread looks so good, and with a little butter, even better. I noticed your little dish towel in the back ground. I've been looking for some, and haven't found any cute ones yet. That's a good idea to put the carrot tops in a vase, and look how nicely your carrots have grown! Love that poem you shared too. Happy Fourth of July weekend.

  5. Carrots are one of my favorite veggies, fixed almost any way and also raw. My mom used to make zucchini bread. Once year she had so much zucchini that my brothers and I looked for the tiny green specks in almost anything she fixed for dinner since she tried to use all that she couldn't give away.

  6. I haven't watched that series about John Adams. It sounds like a good thing to watch on the 4th of July. After coming to Washington D.C. on vacation this year, I am inspired to read a lot more American history. I agree with you about growing vegetables. Water is always a concern here in the Western U.S.. See you again soon. Happy Weekend! :-)
