Lamp staring

So I've been doing a lot of staring - at the lamp -

I was trying to find some photos of the way the lamp looked originally when my parents had them. I inherited them and they were very 80's. They were contemporary with 2 thin glass panels that had flowers etched into them - and the bottom had a nightlight.

I was patient - I knew I wanted to get a newer sofa - I found my old sofa on the Facebook marketplace. It was practically brand new.

Then I started not liking the lamps - they just didn't match the rustic look of that sofa.

I think I saved the 4 glass panels somewhere in my craft room which I removed - Then I wrapped the thick rope around and around, using the hot glue gun. What I should have done before that, was spray paint the hardware -  which I never got around to. This time I will do that!

They were okay - better than before, but always with the hope that as soon as I find a good match, I would buy new lamps. It never happened. In the photo, you can peak at the metal stem in the middle.

Then I found these lampshades - not exactly what I wanted - I wanted the leather stitching around the end - thought I might be able to do it myself, but never did. I'm big on texture...

THE DIY PLAN

I like this one - it has all the colors that would work.

I like the green in this one.

I think I will encase the base in a wood frame that I will have to glue together and then use small wood screws for strength.  Then cover the wood with a tumbled river rock mosaic tile you use for a backsplash.

OR

I also thought about wood shingles. But that is too much work, cutting all the small pieces of wood in small shapes - I wanted to stain each piece with slightly different but coordinating stain. Then I thought, what about doll house shingles???

The base colors in my living room are natural tans, black, and gray. I have a lot of pops of color according to the seasons. I don't want too much tan - introduce a bit more gray. Maybe the shingles could have a hint of seafoam green or the rocks could have a bit more color...

I've narrowed it down to these two - need to go out and price the rock tiles and dollhouse shingles. Tomorrow I hope to unwrap it, and then spray paint the hardware so I can look at it some more. I know I know, crazy!

The husband is working a 4-hour job 3-7 today and tomorrow. He works on call. Not like he was last year - that was just too much. He told the supervisor, that he didn't want to work more than 15 hours a week. They have been more than accommodating.

Today Navy told me his blisters have spread and he had a painful night last night - he could hardly sleep. You know, no matter how old your kids get, you still feel bad for them - especially something like this. He turns 38 next month.

The movie last night was very good. Very tense, even though you know he gets caught but you almost forget as you get so into the drama, that you're on the edge of your seat.

  2. I would never have thought to re-do the lamps. I like the idea of river rock but the shingles are nice too. Good luck with the project.
I certainly hope Navy will recover soon from what ails him. No matter how old our "kids' are they are always our babies.

  4. I like the dollhouse shingle idea. Much more work, but so very much more interesting.

I hope Navy gets over his bout with shingles very soon.

    God bless.

    1. I do too, but too big of a project for me. I would like to use that idea on a vase or something like that on a smaller scale though.
