We were skimmed -

My former "nanny" boss and her husband came for a visit on Saturday - It was good to see them again. I thought it had been 10 years but they said more like 15. Time sure flies by fast. They gifted me with this beautiful HUGE poinsettia plant - 36 inches in height and you can see, it hides the cuckoo clock to the side. Since they are dangerous to cats - I had a hard time finding a place Susie couldn't get to. She chews on fake and natural plants. Grrrrr.

It will go outside on the patio -

We've been SKIMMED

Credit card skimming is a fraudulent act where a skimmer fits a small device on a real card reader to capture your credit card information. These devices sit flush with the machine and are not easy to spot unless you proactively examine the machine.

Last Thursday I noticed the fraudulent activity on my checking account - I called the bank and they canceled my debit card since it was a POS entry.  Today I checked again and the total, they have taken out is close to $200. That person asked about my husband's debit card - for some reason we just assumed it was mine - NOT! It was his. So they have canceled his.

He is out camping with Foodie. (Today is Foodie's birthday)  I've tried reaching him to no avail. So both of us are without debit capabilities. I have to write a check to get some cash to bid us over till the cards come in.

I think I know where this came from - the gas station. To get cheaper gas, he goes over to a more seedy part of town - He can still do this - just use cash from now on for gas. We will get the money returned - might take a month or so. I'm waiting for the form to fill out.

WHAT A HASSLE.

But it's not the end of the world and it could have been worse. They could have drained us. Now this will start my husband's rant about using nothing but cash. I don't want to carry around a lot of cash. Plus that constant worry, if you have enough when you go grocery shopping. Using checks makes for dirty looks - I don't want that. When I order online, I always use a credit card with cash-back rewards - then pay it off.

Oh well, at least I caught it. Imagine those who never look at their checking accounts...

Do you use cash instead of your debit????

OMG, is this not the yuckiest bird ever? I found this on my photo cloud. For the last few years, I kept meaning to post this on my blog and always forgot.

This was the actual turkey of an acquaintance I used to know - who moved to Arkansas a few years ago from here in California.  She posted this, as her turkey before she place it in the oven or a smoker... Immediately I thought it was a joke - but it wasn't. Good thing I didn't comment with a "laughing" emoji.

I hope this post finds you all well - and anticipating the big feast tomorrow. We'll be enjoying the big bird at Navy and his wife's home. Her Mom and Grandma will be there as well, as her brother, sister-in-law, niece, and then all of us. Foodie and Char will be there as well.

I'm glad she is doing it. I'm looking forward to it.

Sunday I made stuffing for the all-church Thanksgiving potluck - I've baked some small mini pumpkin bread for Sara's mom and grandma. We had a chocolate advent calendar for the little girl. I baked some banana nut bread for us.

I plan to start my Christmas decorating on Friday and this weekend. I can't wait.

  1. Oh no on the slimming. We are the financial caregivers /court order /control of all money etc. for my mil and her husband. ANYWAYS--this recently happened to us. Not only did the bank rectify this, but they also found the crook and pressed charges. Wishing you a beautiful Thanksgiving, it looks to be near 80* here in Florida.

    1. That’s good to know. Like I said this could have been worse.

Happy Thanksgiving to you as well. It won’t be in the 80’s but it is mild in the 70’s. Cold at night though.

  2. Your pic of the bird will not come thru. So sorry about the skimming! But you are so right, it could have been a lot worse! We use credit cards all the time, we get one and a half percent back on everything we spend. Hope you have a great thanksgiving!!

  3. Dearest Debby,
So glad you caught that fraude in time—could have been a lot worse.
No we for years no longer carry cash with us. Only when we travel we have enough cash for leaving on the pillow at the hotels we stay at—for tip.
We only use credit cards for free miles and for free hotel nights. The free miles we no longer want to use so slowly we're doing away with that card. Pieter's got already cancelled.
Since they don't move points from Pieter's name to mine, we're about to cancel his card too. First we will use up all the points for free nights of course! Then I'm continuing with my 'new' card.
So far all our fraud cases have been immediately cancelled and we never had any issues—no waiting either. Feels good.
That indeed is a huge Poinsettia but indeed, they seem to be mildly toxic and as your Susie has such a habit—be careful!
Your image is NOT showing up so can't react to that.
Wishing you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving—you already did your part on Sunday for being meaningful to others.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    2. Debby, it only reads that the page does not exist and the other link does not show the image. But it is now visible here on your post! Well, there are cooks—and cooks...🙉

  4. The plant is beautiful. I still have mine from last year. It is green now but still nice!!
We put everything on a credit card that gives us cash back so we make money using it.

  5. So sorry that happened to you both. I use my credit card for the points back when I shop. I do use the debit card for small things.

    God bless.

  6. What a pretty poinsetta, and a nice gift.
Aaagh on the skimming. I had it done once too and it's such a pain!
That turkey is not one I want to eat. :)
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  7. We had problems recently with a credit card that was scammed by at least 2 if not 3 people. Biggest one was $500 for a resort in Florida. That was in fraud so it was taken off and other 4 will eventually get taken off. But we won't be paying for those. P had to get another credit card with a different number and I got same one I usually have but updated with dates. I use cash at times but not always. Enjoy your time with family. The poinsettia is pretty. Hopefully the cat won't get destroyed.

  8. I am so sorry about the credit card mess. We have had a credit card stolen online at least 4 times and Capitol One caught it every time, let us know, cancelled the card and overnighted a new one. Gotta love a proactive company like that.
I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving. xo Diana

  9. Darn on the skimming issue. It is such a nuisance. I don't use debit often, I prefer to use my credit card (for the points) and I pay it off in full each month. However, I do check my banking information often (2-3 times a week) and have a spread sheet to track spending. Cash is something I rarely use, though keep a small amount on me for small purchases.
Sounds you'll have a fun day with family. Happy Thanksgiving!

  10. Sorry to hear about your financial woes. If you don't want to use charge cards or revert to cash-only, look into getting a reloadable debit card. However, you have to read the fine print to make sure the fees are reasonable. One of the banks in my area offers a card that can be reloaded out of your checking account for no fee

  11. I'm sorry to hear about your banking fiasco. This happened to me only once years ago. It is good to use cash when we can, but I know what you mean about the grocery store and wondering if you'll have enough. I look forward to seeing your Christmas decorating. It's always fun to see how everyone decorates. I will post some of mine on Monday. That red poinsettia is wonderful. It just made me smile looking at it. : )
