Wednesday at the Lake

Lake Shasta is considered the jewel of northern California. Planted in the middle of towering mountains and 365 miles of stunning shoreline, it attracts thousands of houseboaters every year. It’s been given the prestigious title of Houseboat Capital of the World.

I woke up to a beautiful sunny day - No rain for a few more days and the timing is great since we need to dry out a little. Last night there were dramatic water rescues when a swollen creek overtook a home in the next town from us.

My son's friend had to evacuate his home - due to rising water. Today they have lifted all mandatory evacuations.

So we drove to Lake Shasta - less than 20 minutes from us just to check the lake levels. The news had said, the lake received 6-7 feet of water in 24 hours.

Driving out this way made me excited for hot summer nights - I thought back to the days when I was a child and lived in the bay area and we'd come up here for vacations. We'd always roll in at night - and the hot summer air smelled so good.

I’m getting excited for those summer nights - I'm going to need some new hiking boots and I also plan to go through my summer clothes -  it’s time to get ready…

The manzanita bushes are starting to bloom. I saw cows, goats, and lamb as we drove over to the lake, and even they looked like they too, were enjoying the sunshine.

We drove out to the dam - to see the lake.

It was windy out but a clear day around 60 degrees.

Mt Shasta in the distance.

We stopped to get a milkshake and I had planned to go get some bedding plants for my planters but the husband said his ears were bothering him/itching,  so we came home and he went to the urgent care at the VA - no infection - they gave him an antihistamine.

Talked to an old friend on the phone while he was at the clinic.

I did the floors this morning - opened all the windows to air out the house and shook the rugs and let them stay outside to air out as well.

So that's all I have for you this Wednesday.

Debby

  1. Well, now I know why when I look up houseboats there are always some from that area! I would LOVE a houseboat but they are not good in our waters here (Lake Michigan). We used to have a live-aboard cruiser and spent 4 happy summers from spring until the end of October on the boat...driving to work and coming home to our 'floating home'. I loved it. Glad your hubby didn't have an infection. Hugs- Diana

    1. The hubs is doing better. I don't think people actually live on these houseboats full time. When I lived in the bay area, there were many people who lived on boats in harbors and at one time when the husband and I were first married, we looked into buying a boat that was already in a permanent slip - They were built on platoons - I just loved the whole lifestyle.

  2. I had no idea about the houseboats! I don't know if I could live on one, I may need solid ground under my feet.

  3. Love seeing the pictures of the lake. I have such a special place in my heart for Lake Shasta. We camped there every summer when I was growing up. Hirtz Bay campground, boating and waterskiing every day, sometimes on the way to the floating store to get ice every few days. Playing and hiding in the Manzanita brush. Back then you could leave your boat in the water without worrying about anyone bothering your stuff. Ice chests and towels back to camp and pretty much everything else stayed in the boats.
When I was just out of High School we did a week on the lake with our friends in a house boat. What a fun week that was. I remember thinking this was the cleanest I every stayed camping since our feet didnt really ever hit that red dirt! One evening there was a ski show near Bay Bridge.

  4. Dearest Debby,
What a lovely drive to the special lake.
We've been on a houseboat on a big lake in Tennessee, with our friends.
    Nature is so special.
    Hugs,

  5. The lake is gorgeous, and the weather sounds absolutely wonderful. Still freezing here but at least no snow expected for a few days. April can't come soon enough.
I hope the meds take care of the discomfort for your husband. Enjoy shopping for plants!

  7. Beautiful lake and mountains! There is a place in Tennessee where you can rent a houseboat/ I forgot the name of the town. Here in Michigan where we live, our town is known as the Venice capital of the US because of all of the canals we have along our mighty St Clair river. Janice

    1. They're expensive and we would have to go in with other members of the family. About $2000 a day.

  11. Lake Shasta is lovely, and so glad you got a chance to visit. I'm not a Summer person at all, but I do remember loving it as a kid and Yes, the smell of the Summer air! There's nothing like In-N-Out burgers, right? I went to Redding recently, and wondered if I should get In-N-Out or pizza, but pizza it was. Your photos today are really nice. Getting out in nature is the best feeling ever.

Happy first day of Spring Debby!
