Opting OUT - Birds and Susie

I am choosing to clean up my internet presence because my ex-husband has some people trying to find him. My sons and I regularly receive phone calls and emails regarding him. We've told these "callers" to not call us again but they continue. The best remedy is to go to the source where they are getting our information.

  • Deleting your data from a public search database doesn't make it inaccessible—just less easy to access.
  • Those are always the risks you take when using the internet or registering anything on any website.
  • Steps to remove data differ depending on the site, some of which include Radaris, USA People Search, Whitepages, 411.com, Private Eye, and Intelius.

This has a good selection of places that might have your name, family members listed, address, and phone number. I actually just found an old one from 2012 when I was in marketing and had my own little business.

It's easy to do - just time-consuming. You don't have to be tech-savvy. You go to each site, enter your name and city and if you come up - there is a place where you can "opt-out" and have them delete your personal information. It's not hard and you should check once a year. That's why I do it in January.

Or you can pay to have it done for a price.

These places are also a source from which many of the telephone scam calls come from and junk mail. I found that Classmates.com and even Ancestry sell our information to 3rd parties. I have opted out of Classmates. I joined that years ago - but just deleting my account did not delete my information and there for all the world to see, were all the schools I went to. Next, I will contact Ancestry. I've been with them since 2006.

For me, it is unsettling to find my information on the internet. Some of these sites list my son's name, and both husbands - as well as my parents who have been dead since 2007/2008. I'm not afraid or fearful - just being proactive and smart and taking steps to ensure my personal information stays personal.

Back to Regular Programming.

Susie last night on my lap - she is such a HUNK. Those of you with cats - do you ever play cat videos on YouTube for them to watch? Susie once a day, tunes into her favorite "show" of birds and squirrels and critters. If I wasn't using my cell phone - I'd video her - it's absolutely adorable.

This is one of her favorites.

Then there are our birds. We put in a garden window years ago just for Susie. She eats her food there and can lie down and watch the birds. She's pretty used to them but the doves always get her excited if they move too close to the window.

I told my husband we need more bird feeders - We have 2 in the front not counting the hummingbird feeder and in the back we have 2 feeders and 2 hummingbird feeders. You can tell it was a dreary day when I took this photo.

Have a great Sunday.

That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all …

  1. I hope all this web cleaning works really well. Seems there is always a bad side to most good advances. Susie is so lucky to have you!

    1. I'm done with it all. I found these people databases that I never signed up - but has a list of all my family, past residences, phone numbers and email addresses. Crazy. That website I posted was helpful in getting to them all.

We're blessed to have Susie. She is such a joy...when she's not being a little booger! She definitely is the boss around here - even over the dog!

  2. I hope your internet cleaning goes well. After reading your post I am going to take a closer look at my footprint on the internet. I have shut down a few things, but could probably do even more.

Our Shania crossed the rainbow bridge a few years back and both of us feel that we will never get such a lovely fur baby again so are without one right now. I really miss a cat in the house and love when youngest brings his for a visit. Even though she does not like us very much.

    God bless.

    1. I thought I had a pretty clean slate but things were out there - I took the time (and it took me all this morning) to opt out and I feel good about it. Hopefully it will also cut down on the spam phone calls and the people eventually won't be calling me to look for my ex. I hope it all goes well for you too.

  3. After reading your post it makes me very thankful no one ever looks for me. I've always felt invisible. Maybe it's a good thing. I pray the scams will stop and you'll be able to relax. I know you do already but just keep praying and trusting that Jesus will keep a hedge of protection around you. He will.

Such a cute cat! Our new dog, Maggie (the rescue), is absolutely the best dog I've ever owned. She's so smart, loving, energetic, and alert. Makes life even more fun having her around. I know God sent her to us because she lifts our spirits so much. I'd have a dozen Maggie's if we could afford them.

Sending blessings and prayers from Gawga. *lol* xx

    1. I just get tired of being constantly reminded of my ex. It’s been 30 years yet my sons and I keep getting hounded. We’ll go 6 mos with nothing and then 6 weeks of phone calls. Annoying and frustrating!

  5. Thanks for the internet info. I looked up one already, but it requires me to enter an email to opt out. Is that required on all of them? Also, have the information was incorrect on the first database I looked at. thanks for the help.

    1. Yes. Your email address is part of the record. Not just your name and addresses. They have to verify you are you or else anyone could be requesting information.

  6. It's so frustrating that these places sell our info. I'm going to have to look some up. Like Classmates, I never even use it but they have my info.
When we had a cat, we played those videos and our cat loved it too.

    1. With classmates I had to request my password- It had been years since I used it. Then after I got in, was able to request they remove my information and delete my account. Most of the information had on me came from sources I had years ago - like Linked In. I had to do that as well. Ancestry I fixed by double checking the privacy and I had not done that. It’s just crazy.

  7. That's a good idea to have the cats watch a bird clip. I'm sure Luca would love that at Nel's house. I don't have any feeders at my house, yet the birds seem to always come around. But my neighbors have a hummingbird feeder, and they get them frequently. That picture of the mourning dove by your fence is sweet, love that. It's good that you are cleaning up your computer a bit.

Have a good week in the new year, Debby.

  9. It's crazy how easy it is to find someone on the internet. When my sister was visiting, she mentioned several people that she lost touch with over the years and wondered what they were up to. Within minutes I had found several of them. I do not blame you for opting out as well!

    1. I have found people on the internet (old friends) and they were shocked. I told them all their information in online. Even the price of their homes. You're right, it is crazy.
