Wednesday Hodgepodge on a Tuesday

From this Side of the Pond

I won't be around Wednesday - so today is my Hodgepodge

1. Did you watch the Kentucky Derby this past weekend?

No.

Have you ever been to a horse race?

Yes - When I was raising my three boys, we used to live near the Bay Meadows Race Track in San Mateo. We could hear Doc Severinsen (of Johnny Carson fame) playing the opening bugle for certain races from our house. The legendary racehorse Seabiscuit won two major races: one in 1937 and another in 1938.

They closed and demolished the track for upscale housing, shops, and restaurants. Grrrrrrr. Many lower-income people and the elderly were tragically displaced, some ending up homeless. All for the love of gentrification.

Ever ridden a horse? Did you enjoy it?

Yes. I used to enjoy horseback riding.

Have you ever been to Kentucky?

Yes, many times.

Do you like Bourbon?

Absolutely Not.

2.  What's something you wish you'd placed in a time capsule fifteen years ago?

Before the market crash in 2008/2009  I would have placed my 50% portion of the Lockheed pension, in a time capsule. Unfortunately, many people lost their retirement savings during that time.

3. Are you adventurous? Elaborate.

I used to be. I took a lot of risks, and I'm not talking about vacation "adventures" but life adventures. Mind you, these were my "BC days before Christ" I am amazed that I made it out alive! God is good - I am so unapologetically grateful for His Forgiveness.

4. Something you want to make this year? It can be a new recipe, craft, diy project, a milestone you've set for yourself...anything at all.

I don't know yet. Whatever comes up, if I want to do it, I'll do it.

Sunday Dinner

5. Cinco de Mayo was also celebrated this past weekend...do you like Mexican food?

Do I like Mexican food?  Hahahahaha!

I love Mexican food or Mexican-inspired dishes, and we eat them several times a week. We had burrito bowls for dinner on Friday night, on Sunday I made beef enchiladas and we had the leftovers last night. Today is Taco Tuesday, so I'll be making tacos.

If so, what's your favorite dish?

It's probably best if I mention the dishes that I do not like or refuse to eat...

I dislike any dish that uses tripe, such as Menudo, any dish with shellfish, and criadillas (bull testicles). Although I have never tried it, I do not want to try it. Beef tongue falls into that category as well. I must admit that I am quite picky. I do not like to eat weird cuts of meat or fish, and I also refuse to try Mexican caviar, which is made from the larvae and pupae of ants.

Have you ever been to Mexico?

Yes, several times to Baja, if that counts.

Margarita-yes or no?

That would be a BIG NO.

In my single BC days, back in the early 70's - I had a blackout experience with tequila once.  I never got drunk again or used any other substances. Even the mere smell of tequila, to this day, makes me nauseous. My husband likes Margaritas when we eat at a Mexican place -

6. Insert your own random thought here.

A winter-like storm blew through here this past weekend, bringing snow and rain to higher elevations. I'm glad it has passed, and warmer days are ahead.

Friday evening, we enjoyed the concert performances of the students from Jessup University - giving me hope that not all of that generation is lost.

Around here, these are known as Indian Hawthorne - They are a shrub. The only thing I don't like about them is when the flowers die off, its practically impossible to pick off all the spent blossoms - leaving behind a lot of dead flowers.

Well, that's it for me this Tuesday and for tomorrow. See you on Thursday!

Debby

  1. Pretty flowers, interesting questions and answers, I have never been to the races but have ridden a horse way back when I think I liked it but maybe not it was a long time ago.
Living in Australia I have never been to Kentucky nor do I drink bourbon.
I am in no way adventurist and I have never tried Mexican food

  2. Your Mexican dinner looks yummy! I took too many risks when I was much younger, too.

    1. It was yummy like always.
I was rebellious back "in the day" so I took a lot of chances.

  3. Hmm, I actually have a few answers to this Hodge Podge.

I have been to horse races as a child, however the day I saw a horse killed because of a broken leg was the last time I ever went.

I have been horseback riding numerous times, and really would like to go again if my back will allow it.

I want to learn how to weave. This is something I have wanted to do for a very long time.

    God bless.

    1. After my husband retired from the military he worked as an Equine therapist in Florida. He worked exclusively with race horses and saw a lot of abuse. Needless to say, that career choice did not work out!

  4. I've never been to a horse race, but I have been to Kentucky, grew up with horses, and I do like Bourbon on occasion. I love Mexican food, and we love to try new recipes. I am on the fence about Margaritas. They are good, but so high in calories.

  5. We hear so much of the bad-crazy-what in the world is happening-sorts of news reports from universities, but there are also some truly amazing things happening on college campuses with this generation too. All is not lost! Have a great day!

    1. Most are not even students - just paid agitators. It warmed my heart to hear from these students in the midst of a week full of hate.
      Thanks for dropping by! ❤️

  6. I had to eat cow´s tongue as a child and it tasted as awful as it sounds! I am with you on all the Mexican food items you won´t eat. That Indian Hawthorne shrub sure is pretty :). Have a great day!

  7. We used to go to a racetrack that was behind Metro airport. We would have dinner, do some betting on the horses but the best part was watching the planes come in low over the racetrack. How they didn't scare the horses is beyond me. It closed a few years ago and we miss going there.

  8. Hello Debby, Thank you for the encouragement regarding the universities. UW Madison here in Wisconsin went NUTS... and you are right, paid agitators... all the tents are the same??? Hmmmmmmm??? Anyway... I won't get started.

I love Mexican food too. And reading and seeing your photos have made me hungry.
    Love, Carla

  9. Although I love shellfish, the other items you've listed are definitely a no for me. Criadillas? No, thank you!

  10. I really love Mexican food and we make tacos, burritos, end enchiladas often..now I want some..yum.
I remember the Tanforan Race Track and how that all changed when the malls came in. Only been to a horse race at the fair. Those horses are so beautiful. Only rode a horse a few times. They were kind of big and scary to me.
Boy we are really having a windy morning. It's already hit 70F so I guess the allergies are about to kick in.

I've been to Kentucky, but not to the Kentucky Derby. I know it would be fun though...I would choose a big Hat! We are non drinkers, so no bourbon or margaritas.

  12. I would never apologize for the forgiveness I have in Christ which gave me peace with God. The best peace! Glad you are forgiven and saved. Hubby and I grew up in Southern California and all our kids were born in California. We love Mexican food and felt like living in southern cal was kinda like Northern Mexico. :) Happy Hodgepodge!
