California Oak

Lone California Oak -

I took these the other day on my walk at the ranch near our home.

I am pleased with how they turned out.

Laydee didn't do very well - we had her all tranked up and she still shook like a leaf, scaring us as if she would have a heart attack. It was a very rough evening from about 9:45 to 10:30.  There were a few fireworks in the subdivision but a few miles away - she still heard it and then the really LOUD ones from the city public display.
Thank God it was a work night.

We're thinking we may next year, just get in the car and drive on the interstate - until it all passes. I don't know if that would work. It seems the older she is (7 years) the worse it gets.

Finally, remember the little eagle babies?

Well, they fledged 2 and 3 weeks ago, and here they are. The city named them, Sentry and Star. Soon they will leave - Mom and Dad return to the nest in late Sept. (provided nothing happens to them, in their off-season) No one knows exactly where they "summer" - probably in the mountains.

  1. Dearest Debby,
So sorry for Laydee's problem, making it through the fireworks' noise...
It is hard on all fur babies to stay calm. Ours were inside, they were scared from the thunder and rain... That was good.
What type of oaks are those? One is more ovate shaped than the other.
There are over 80 varieties of oaks.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. I'm not sure exactly what types these are, but our county has 6 different types - from memory, we have scrub oaks, live oaks, blue oaks, black oaks...

  2. Sentry and Star - I like those names.
Have you ever heard of thundershirts? It's something you put on your dog when it's thundering or for fireworks. It makes them feel they are wrapped up tight. My sisters dog was really helped by wearing it.
Here's the site if you are interested in looking:

    1. Bald eagles - It takes several years for them before they actually look like the adult bald eagle.

  4. We had a lot of fireworks going off here and we were all tired after all the travel, so we went to bed about 10:30 p.m. and the fireworks were still LOUD! Our communities here in Utah ban fireworks due to fire danger and no pays any attention and it seems like every year it gets worse. I love those pictures you took of the California Oaks. I hope you have a good evening and a good day tomorrow!

    1. Last night we had some fireworks go off from a distance - I barely heard it but my dog heard it. She shook for about an hour...

  6. Aww poor Laydee. We had a dog that was so scared of thunder and fireworks she would pace the house and shake like a leaf! I felt to bad because there was no way to comfort her. We have a cat that gets scared too he's older now and he must be losing his hearing because they don't seem to bother him anymore.

    1. It's terrible isn't it? I feel so bad for them. She doesn't like the dark or loud noises. The cat doesn't seem to mind too much.
