Flowers, The Eclipse, No More Bargains, Jury Duty and a Close Call.

Just the same old flowers I have every year. I love their bold color.

These are blooming at the base of the palm tree.

The first Iris of the season.

These wild marigolds bloom year-round but spread out. I see some popping out in other places on the back hill - which is what we want.

This oak tree was dead on one side, so my husband cut it down a couple of years ago. Now, the oak fungus is growing out of the stump.

These primroses have been steady bloomers all through the winter. Soon, their flowering season will be behind us. However, they will continue to grow and multiply. As long as I keep them sheltered from the 100+ summers, they will do well.

The sweetgum tree is showing off its spring green -

So for those of you in the path of the total eclipse, how was it?

This is my husband back in 2012.

We didn't notice any difference here -

Of course, we weren't in the path -
I remember, as a child, in the 60's being told about an eclipse that was about to happen. (not a total - I don't believe I have ever seen that)  I was afraid about looking at the sun. The teachers put the "Fear of God" in all of the kids back then.

A nice summer is in the works with an almost full Lake Shasta!
This was taken Saturday.

This is fantastic for our local economy!

No More Bargains
another store closes...

The 99 cent stores are closing - going out of business.

All 371 locations (California, Nevada, Arizona, and Texas) were hit hard with the lockdowns, then inflation, and they started raising their prices: $1.99, $2.99, $5.99, etc. My 99-cent store was big, like a supermarket, with fresh produce, bread, Mexican pastries, and tortillas. Even with the price increase, some items were comparable. It was just one of those funky places - they had good music while you shopped.

A Close Call

While shopping,  I heard an announcement over the intercom that a car parked in the lot had been hit. The car was described as a silver grey KIA and the license plate number was read out loud. I own a silver KIA myself and the license plate number sounded familiar. The announcement continued as they said that there were witnesses and partial license plate numbers available. I decided it was best to go outside and check what had happened. I tried to stay calm and kept telling myself that it was only a car and not the end of the world if it was mine. When I arrived outside, I saw one of the witnesses and he started telling me about the incident. I pointed to my car, but he said that it wasn't my KIA that had been hit, but another one. The other KIA was a newer model than mine (ours is a 2020) and was completely smashed in. I felt so bad for the owner.

It was a personal victory for me because I didn't get upset over the situation. In the past, I would have reacted so much differently. I would have been a "wreck." myself.  It's surprising how calm I was this time. I'm thinking, getting older has its advantages!

At least WAIT till you get the facts before losing it.

No Jury Duty - I'm on Telephone standby -
I will call again at the end of the day for further info.

  1. Wow, so thankful your car wasn't the one that was hit, but sorry the ones whose car it was! That was upsetting for them. Proud of you for your strength and calm in the time of possible crisis. The eclipse here was very slight. We were not in the path, but the sun was partially hidden and the peepers in the pond started peeping like they do in the evening. Your flowers are lovely, and I love that oak fungus too. Natural decay can be beautiful! Sorry about your 99 cent store. I know the Dollar Tree keeps raising their prices. How wonderful that Lake Shasta is filling up...it's beautiful! I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week.

  2. Dearest Debby,
Your flowers are stunning and they bring such joy to our days.
Yes, back in The Netherlands I've watched an eclipse and that was quite an experience. Did view this one as well.
Sad when cars get hit on a parking lot...
    Hugs,

  3. We were directly in the path of the eclipse, and it was a very creepy, eerie feeling when it all went completely dark out. The solar lights came on, and it was just strange. I checked on my chickens after it got light again, and they were all huddled together in a corner of their run. Family Dollar stores are closing in our area, but I never shopped there, as one local store closed many years ago. My problem now, is that many items I bought at other stores are no longer being made or carried in stores. I have to find another organic variety on some items now.

    1. Aww poor chickens. That must have been amazing. I can see how kinda spooky it would have been.
I think we’re going to start seeing many stores going out of business. Sad

  4. Your flowers and trees are so pretty! We're just getting some buds here.
We were in the 95% of totality for the eclipse and it was really amazing to see!
Jury duty - I've been asked twice but we had such a nursing shortage at the time that I was released from it. It would be interesting though. My sister was once a juror on a murder trial.
Good for you for staying calm and so glad your car is ok!

    1. Me too because when it’s all said and done, as long as no one was hurt, it’s just a car. It can be replaced. Granted it’s a hassle with insurance and all but why get myself all worked up? I’m learning how to not freak out over such things.

  6. Beautiful flowers! Except for the one's I've planted, ours are pretty much played out.
We only had a partial eclipse in Southeast Georgia. I think it was around 30% overcast or something. No biggy. It was a lovely day too.
I'm so glad the KIA wasn't yours! Parking lots are dangerous places. When I'm riding I park way across from the store then walk up. We motorbikes tend to be "invisible" to those in cages or they just don't care if they hurt us. Sometimes I wonder ... *wink*
There for awhile, I was called for Jury Duty over and over. Finally they've quit doing that. It used to be a pleasant experience but now they're not allowing us women to carry purses, etc! I think that's very wrong of them to do that.
    Blessings.

    1. Same for bicycle riders - cars think they own the road and since we have a lot of bike lanes, people in cars still get all mad about it. I can imagine how it is on your motorcycle.

  7. Love your flowers blooming their heads off around your place. They are so cheerful.
Thrilled your car wasn't the one smashed and how you handled the situation. Happy dance on the jury duty though I know you would have put your all into it.
No difference here in Sac. area either..maybe just a wee bit duller for a while. Actually the eclipse in 2017 was better at our house.
    Have a great day.

  8. I have never seen Primroses that look like this, how cool!! Wow that wreck announcement must have put a scare into you, so glad it was not your car! I have never heard of these stores! We have Dollar General and Dollar Tree.

  9. Our daffodils are just starting to bloom now here in Michigan. The eclipse was 99% here and it was an amazing event. So glad your car was not affected. Janice

  12. So glad to read that the accident was not with your KIA.

No eclipse here, even though we were in the 41% range, just too cloudy.

    God bless.

  13. Beautiful flowers you have. I have so many that I doubt I will buy much this year. It's dry and warm today so I'll need to water the potted plants ðŸŠī this evening or tomorrow. I'm glad your car wasn't crushed by another vehicle. Sad it happened to someone else 😞 .No eclipse view here in Oregon and there were clouds ⛅️ hiding the sun. Good to view online later on Monday. God bless your week and beyond 🙏 🌷

  14. That is so weird that there was two silver KIA"s the day you were in the store. I hope the owner of the other car is Ok. Too bad about the 99 Cent store. Do you still have any Dollar Stores where you live? Your flowers are so pretty, but I especially like those purple primroses. And my favorite color! The photo of Lake Shasta is beautiful. My brother-in-law is coming to visit soon, and we may head on over to Mt. Shasta for a visit....we'll see.

    Have a wonderful week, Debby.

The other Kia was a darker grey/silver.

  15. I am glad your car was not hit and you were calm about it. A lake near us has gotten more water this rainy year. Things are looking up for lots of pretty flower and on the downside, mosquitoes. I enjoyed your pictures. Same here about the 99 cent stores.

  16. We were in 98% totality and it was very strange. They had 100% in Luna Pier which is in SE Michigan. We did not go there though. It was crazy with traffic and people but pretty neat to watch on TV!

  19. Is oak fungus from the oak tree or is this some weird name coincidence?

    1. Oak root fungus is from the tree trunk. We had a very wet rainy season.
