When Blogger gives you lemons, use Google Photos!

The sunset the other evening -
overlooking the Sacramento River on the Sundial Bridge.

I had forgotten about using Google Photos for my blog photos.
Duh! All the photos I take with my iPhone automatically go to Google Photos, and so far, so good.

The other evening, Foodie called to inform me that he had carpenter ants at his complex—more like a full-out infestation! He rents a studio apartment next to the laundry room. As soon as he noticed the ants, he contacted the property management team, who scheduled an exterminator to visit his place between 2 and 4 p.m.

It's a matter of time before they seek new places to destroy.

Today's A-Z post is  Senseless Deaths.

When researching my ancestors, I feel like I'm uncovering a mystery waiting to be told, and it's up to me to discover it.

I have received two summons for Jury Duty with different names - one says Debra and the other says Debby. Each summons has a different badge number. I will have to contact them and clarify which name and badge number to use.

I had a plan in mind in case I couldn't upload any photos on my blog. I was going to use the photos from my previous blogs and write about them. Now that I can upload photos, I am still thinking of using the old photos and writing about them once a week or so. I am always looking for new blog ideas. However, it takes about a day for the photos to upload from my phone to Google Photos.

This photo of Navy is at the San Jose International Airport. He was leaving for Navy Bootcamp at Great Lakes, Illinois.
This was in February 2004. He was 19.

They gave him one phone call when he got there - we get a call around midnight - short and sweet. Of course, being a Mom, I want all the details and that wasn't going to happen. That's when I knew, it's 100% out of my control. The US Navy owned him.

My husband thought the whole thing was funny. He'd been there - and done all that. I still have his letters he wrote to me - apparently he did something that they didn't like and made him do a ridiculous amount of push ups.

Again, my husband got a kick out of it.

Navy never regretted signing up. Those were some of his best years and if anything, he regrets not staying in longer and zeroing in on that pension after 20 years. He would have been young enough (39) to have another career and collect a sizeable pension.

Here we are in April at his Navy graduation.

He was sent to Naval Aviation School in Pensacola, Florida, where he received training to work on the flight deck. During his training, he was prepared for all possible scenarios that might occur on a flight deck. After a few months of training, he was granted leave and returned home for around ten days before being assigned to the USS Theodore Roosevelt stationed at Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia. Within six months, he was deployed to the Persian Gulf for the first time.

I noticed a significant change in him when he returned home; he had matured and him and my husband grew closer.

Yours truly,

Debby or Debra

  1. I use Google photos for my blogging too and it has worked well so far!
I liked that pic of Navy heading off. My son was in the army and also thinks he should have just stayed in. He still works on the base as a civilian, repairing Apache helicoptors.
Your other blog post was very interesting today. All those deaths and sadness...

  2. Dearest Debby,
Those carpenter ants are awful, hope they can destroy them.
Your Navy son sure made a good choice and after a tough training he got deployed for learning more. Yes, that does make you mature fast!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  3. I'm still trying to figure out the photo thing since my old computer crashed and I no longer have Picasa. I am using something that is on my computer. I send photos to my email, and then download them and edit them and they are saved in a download file on my computer. I just do a group at a time of whatever I want to use for my blog. It's a pain to do it this way, but it really doesn't take any more time than it did before. I can't import them directly from my phone to the computer anymore, so this seems to work. Love the photos of you and Navy and the story of his career. Thank him for his service. You are blessed to have him still. Carpenter ants do not sound like a fun thing to deal with. Thank goodness it isn't Foodie's own property so he doesn't have to pay for the damages, extermination, etc. Glad he found them in time. That newspaper clipping...I am assuming was a relative. What year was this, does it say? Very sad. I am way behind in reading your posts, so I don't know anything else about what's going on. Take care my friend.

    1. He was my mom's grandfather. But I have since found out that his son was not my mom's biological father. Nevertheless, he was still family.

      It was in 1932.

  5. I am thinking there is nothing like joining the service to make someone wise and mature, and able to make good choices, and be brave as well! your sunset is gorgeous! So you have done jury duty twice? I love the Monopoly card!

    1. No, it's their mistake. I will go with the correct one - Jury duty for me is Tuesday, April 9. They will take care of the mistake.

  10. I thought those wings looked like termite wings. Unfortunately, I have had the displease to find them in my house before.
I remember when my good friend's son joined the marines. He is already very tall. I think 6'3" or 6'4" and seeing him in uniform after he came home from basic he looked about 7 foot tall. He had also planned at one point to make it a career but after this second stint he changed his mind. I actually found out just recently he is suffering from some hearing loss as part of working around helicopters.

    1. Hearing loss to some degree seems to be common in the military.

  11. That's so sad about the note written from the 72 year old man. I'm so sorry to read that. Oh my gosh, that is a whole lot of ants. I do hope he gets the exterminator there soon and clears them out. That's a nice picture of you and your son. It must have been a shock to you when he enlisted.

Have a restful weekend, Debby. It was sunny the last couple days, and then we got rain and thunder? Did you get it too?

    1. Actually it wasn’t a shock - I was proud. He had been talking about it since 9-11 so I knew he wanted to serve. He did play college football one semester and they won the Silicon Valley Bowl and his coaches didn’t want him to go but he had already committed. He signed up just a month before his graduation. He was on a delayed enlistment and was to show up 2/3/04. I’ll never forget that date! 👍🏻 Fortunately my husband is retired veteran so I was informed and I joined a great group of Navy Moms from his aircraft carrier.

Yes we had thunderstorms yesterday and I heard some rumbling this afternoon. The temps have dropped and it’s cold!

Enjoy your weekend and stay warm!

  12. Glad that you found a way to upload your pictures. Sure hope the ants disappear from Foodies apartment.
    Great photos of Navy.

    God bless.

    1. The ants aren’t in his apartment - they are inside the laundry room which is next to his apartment. Too close for comfort!
