Sweet Rain but not enough

Last night we had some much-needed rain. About .40 of an inch. It did nothing to dampen the fires that have surrounded us this whole summer. It is awfully humid today, which we're not used to. The high humidity helps in the firefighting efforts though, so that is good.

Part of the Dixie fire has moved toward Hat Creek and Old Station - a favorite destination of mine. One of my "happy places."

You can see Mt Lassen on the far left
This is gone.

Lassen Volcanic National Park has received its share of fire damage from the Dixie Fire and has yet been able to assess how bad it is.

This is the small town of Old Station. About 60 miles from us. It used to be a stagecoach stop, for those going up to Oregon on the Emigrant Trail eventually becoming an important stop for hikers and backpackers hiking the Pacific Coast Trail, referring to it as Section 34.

Before the COVID pandemic, about 20 PCT hikers arrived per day in midsummer, Usually, everyone who starts from Mexico gets there in July. Old Station is about halfway between (Mexico and Canada). The long-distance hikers sometimes ship their supply parcels ahead for pickup along the trail in these parts.

My sons, Navy and Foodie are devastated. They are long-distance backpackers and this is the area they love the best. It's their "go-to" place when all else fails. They were up there just a few weeks ago - since they couldn't go north or to the west due to those fires.

So far, Old Station hasn't been hit - so far holding off the fire that is approximately 4 miles out.

That was nice of him.

  1. It rained a little here this morning also, and I was glad. I thought it would help with
the fires some. So sad about Lassen National Park. It's not as smoky here as it was,
and it's never humid, which I'm thankful for.

    Stay safe, Debby.

That was indeed nice of the BIL to send a photo. My heart breaks for you all. May the wounds heal and there only be happy days ahead for everyone.
