This and That with a side of Tid Bits

Source: Friends of the Redding Eagles

They're calling them E1 and E2 for now.  There was a city-wide Eagle naming contest, and their new names have not been revealed yet.

They are so cute -

I love this color - I decided to go out and take some pictures of the flowers because tomorrow we're expecting a winter-like storm with snow at an altitude of 3500 feet and above. After the heavy rain and wind, the flowers may not look the same as it does now. But that's spring for you, with its ups and downs.

My dad loved red geraniums - This is for him. His birthday is May 11.

I am grateful that I have a video that I made in mid-May last year. We had scheduled a helicopter ride over the Trinity Mountains, but it was canceled due to rain and snow. Some people may think that this kind of weather is unusual for this time of year, but it is not uncommon.  It has happened before and this is the second year without a drought. People who grew up during the drought may not know what is normal anymore when it comes to rainfall activity in this area.

The red roses are coming in...

It has been forecasted that the temperatures will decrease by 25-30 degrees in a single day. Therefore, we are expecting some cold weather on Saturday, and a few days later, the temperatures will rise again to the high 80's-90's. It is possible that this might be the last storm till the hot weather sets in.

There is the beginning of an infestation of aphids. Grrr, I can't stand bugs that ruin my pretty roses.  We typically use Dawn dish soap in a spray bottle to eliminate them.

The Lavender is starting to bud -

The yellow Iris with a Dusty Miller in the background.

We're giving in to temptation and heading to our favorite Taqueria tonight for dinner, so I don't have to clean up after dinner before we go out. Jessup University is a Christian college that our church supports financially, and once a year they visit from Sacramento to perform. It's a great opportunity to enjoy an evening out while appreciating the exceptional young talent they showcase.

Tid Bits

  • Did my grocery shopping with my son this morning. I am really enjoying this time with him plus there is an upside - he bags my groceries, and puts them in the trunk for me. I'm getting spoiled.
  • My Thursday Job bible study is wrapping up - we have about 2-3 more studies.
  • Wednesday at BSF is optional - its a share day. I plan to go to hear the testimonies of how the book of John touched them.
  • I ordered another research book that goes into detail about my dad's family and area of Scott County, Tennessee. It's called Scott County and it's Mountain Folk. It was written in the 1950's and since there is not a lot of demand for a genealogical resource book, I had to order it from the publisher, through AbeBooks. It has a leather cover and will be here by the end of June. (Publisher in India) .
  • I made my eggplant parmesan on Wednesday evening. Oh my - it is the best ever. The recipe was given to my mom years ago by my friends Italian Nonna. Real simple ingredients - extra virgin olive oil (single sourced) nice firm eggplant, marinara sauce (you're favorite) and a lot of freshly grated parmesan cheese. No egg - No break crumbs!
  • The Saturday before Mothers Day Navy invited us over to his house for a BBQ - He's having Tri-Tip. That will be nice. They have been so busy - we haven't spent any time with them since Christmas and they live 6 miles away! We talk on the phone and text but we're overdue. Sara works at the hospital 3 days a week and then the other 2 days, she works from her house and I don't know exactly what she does but her and another nurse, go to Care Facilities and teach at workshops to the Nurses, CNA's and NP's. She enjoys it but they were down a person - out on maternity and Sara just picked up all the hours. Nurses work tirelessly, dedicating their time and effort to care for others. Sadly, they are not always appreciated as much as they should be.
  • Lastly, Foodie will be once again, serve as Union shop-steward at his Care Facility. I have to hand it to him. It's a position that is always contentious. It can be stressful and this will be his 3rd time in this position, negotiating a union contact - his duties are part of a balancing act between the wishes of the management and fellow employees. People get mad - from both sides at him and he always takes it in stride.

I guess that about concludes this Friday's post. I hope you all have a refreshing weekend doing whatever you want! Stay safe - Until next time...

    1. Not so much brave just not frightened! I do like adventure and can't do what I used to, so it was fulfilling.
You're so right about those babies: All beaks and feet!

  2. Our oldest son, Kurt, is on the negotiating committee for the teachers in his province. Scary as the last time he told the provincial minister what they were offering was bull dung and walked out. The rest of the teacher negotiators walked out with him.

Love your flowers!!! So lucky to have blooms already.

    God bless.

    1. I think I remember you posting about this or maybe it was a comment. There was a time, when Foodie thought he would be fired.

  3. Eagles even look majestic as young. Most nestlings don't look so focused. I wish you were friends with me on FaceBook. I've been sharing lots of our bird photos there. Steve has gotten some good photos of quite a few migratory's and the locals are always willing to pose for us for awhile. *grin* Such ham's.
The flowers are so pretty. I hope y'all don't lose them to the weather.
I get so excited when I find a new genealogy source, especially a book. I can read that for hours.
And you're related to mountain folk too!? Super cool. Mine are McMahan (and various other spellings), Green(e), Dillard, Love, etc. all of western North Carolina eastern Tennessee. They were poor, shoeless, didn't have much book 'larnin' and a few were rascals but there were some that lifted themselves up to success. I had lots of fun learning as much as I could about all of them. Ok, I'll hush up now. *giggle* I get excited about research. I really should have done this for a living.
    Blessings.

    1. Eagles have that unique distinction - representing the USA! I think they know it!
When it comes to genealogy and researching my family tree, I get excited, too. My dad's family mostly came in through North Carolina and Virginia. MY mom's family were all from the north -

  4. I enjoyed your pictures. My roses are blooming well except for one that has aphids. I need to get a spray bottle and spray them. Those eaglets are fluffy and serious looking. Enjoy your weekend!

  5. Love those eagle babies! They are getting so big and "handsome". We had a disappointment with our Canada Geese couple...no babies. But that's nature! I am sure they will try again next year. I enjoyed your post with all kinds of interesting news items...your flowers are gorgeous! Snowy weather in May? Wow! I could use some cooler temps, as we were up to 93 yesterday already! Will be close to that again today. We need rain badly. The pond is starting to dry up, but it does that every year about this time in preparation for the rainy season in June/July. Hopefully it will kill off some of the overcrowded water lily population. I am glad you will be spending some time with your kids and enjoying their company. I know our kids get so busy, but it's really nice when they can take the time to spend with us. Always a blessing! Have a lovely weekend my friend!

  6. I consider myself mountain folk, having lived from age 9 until 16 in Kentucky, not to far from Harland County. I love to hear the sanging speech of Kentucky and still retain a little tang myself if I talk to relatives in Georgia for a while. My time in KY was the happiest years of my life. your flowers are gorgeous. we use dawn also and add a few drops of hot sauce. found that on the internet. No helicopters for me but I do love mountains. I also love Florida, just not the overcrowded, tourist and snowbird part..

    1. I'm not mountain folk - I was raised in San Francisco and on the coast. However, there was always something in me - that I loved about where my dad's family came from. It's in my heart!

  7. Oh, I love those two eagles...The one looks like he is having a bad "hair" day haha.
Gorgeous blooms and yes we here in the Sac. area are having a pretty wet day today. Yesterday we weeded for like forever... temps 85F and nary a cloud in the sky. Today is pouring, gusty and the temps at 12:30Pm is 52F. Snow in the Sierras...
What a difference a day makes.
My Granddaughter graduated from Jessup University last year ad has just completed her first year of teaching at John Adams Academy 6 th graders.
Great school. We would often eat in their cafeteria for Sunday Brunch after church..a terrific buffet for very inexpensive cost . Now closed till fall.

  9. That one iris is simply gorgeous. I did not have that color and I use to have lots of colors at my other house. The yellow one is a beauty too. Love me some roses, alas here with the snakes I cannot have them. I already learned my lesson, so no more. I hate snakes. Taka care with the storm coming in.. We are on tap for more ran overnight. I managed to weed a it this morning before the sun got too hot for me. Hopefully next weekend will be good to do more. Janice

    1. What is with roses and snakes??? As long as they stay away from me, I'm fine. I don't want to see them.

  10. Well, you're talking about us who got the rain and snow haha. It rained pretty hard, and then, we had snow rain! It was like a slushy snow falling from the sky, so neat looking. You're right, I think that's the last of the season, but my neighbor told me that they have seen snow up until June. So, we'll see. Your flowers are pretty, and I especially love those red roses - perfect color. Your eggplant parmesan sounds delicious. My mom used to fry up eggplant for dinner, and I didn't appreciate it at the time, but I would love some now. Here's to your dad's birthday in May! Mine is shortly after his. And here's to your son bagging your groceries and taking them out to the car! So good of him to do that. : )

    1. I thought for sure you’d be having snow! I remember one time about 10 years ago, camping up a Manzanita Lake in Lassen in mid June. In one day it rained, snowed and hailed. We sat in the van listening to the baseball game!

In the mountains, the weather can change fast. I heard they had to rescue some hikers that were on Mt Shasta.

    2. Oh, I hope the hikers are Ok. Nel climbed that mountain twice. The second time she was almost delirious when coming down from it, so exhausted. But it's something she can always say.....I climbed Mt. Shasta!
