A new word and church security

I thought I would snap a shot of the almond tree in bloom.

So they're saying we might get 4-8 inches of snow. It will likely be early tomorrow morning. Today has been icy, with a few snow flurries that didn't stick. We even received something, none of us, have ever heard of - A first for here -

Have you ever heard of Graupel?

It's called Graupel. I saw it this morning, and at first thought, it was hail,  only it was quiet.  Like little mini snowballs.

It's been doing this off and on, all day. A first for here and we learned a new word.

The coastal towns of Crescent City and Eureka had a good amount of snow and they are at sea level!

Southern California issued a blizzard warning! In my almost 69 years, I have never heard of such an event outside of the mountains. Not at low-level elevations! We get snow once every 2 years or so - maybe a day if that. It's always greeted with enthusiasm.

So maybe in the morning, we'll have 4-8 inches of that snow. Gosh, I hope so. I will be so disappointed.

It sure is cold though - and there is a breeze.

Yesterday I went to annual training at my church for those of us who are greeters, ushers, and security.  We went over what we are to do, during fires, earthquakes, etc. Then they talked about Bomb threats and Active shooters and those topics were a first. I guess we do a lot more than just smile, open doors, and greet. They showed us how to access a situation, where the panic buttons are, showed us the 2 AEDs are at, and how to lock the big doors - they have a door clip on them and when to lock them and when to unlock them (like fires)  My husband was asked to join the security team. So I don't know what "they" know but something is going on. The head of security is a retired police officer from our town. So he would know.

It is a sad reality, that our world is not safe and there are those who may want to harm others. I feel really good knowing more than I did the day before. I feel empowered. At least now, if something should happen, I know what to do and of course, we have many on duty so I wouldn't be doing all of this alone.

I'm a protector-type personality. I should have been a cop! Or better, in the military but back when I graduated high school, it wasn't offered nor encouraged. That's probably one of my biggest regrets in life - that I wasn't able to serve my country or my community.

So the best I can do, at my age is to serve my church - and protect the innocents -living out John 15:13.

Does your church have security or security measures?

  1. Dearest Debbie,
Sure never heard of Graupel — or soft hail!
We learn every day—for as long as we live...
You are doing a great job and how well prepared your Church seems to be.
No, we have nothing like that in place...
Indeed a sad fact in nowadays world we live in but the shocking news we hear all too often.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

PS so happy that my Prednisone is easing my pain—looking forward to a decent night sleep after having had a very good afternoon nap! Rest is needed for healing.

    1. I'm glad the prednisone is easing your pain. Yes, you need rest

    2. The correct name was: Medrol Dosepak for 6 days, starting by taking 6, then 5 till last day only 1. Swelling has shrunk a lot and it gave me more flexibility. Sleeping without that stupid knee immobilizer is a LOT better—still legs elevated on a pillow roll, a French peluw as we know it also in The Netherlands. Those meds gave me night sweats but I got rid of my cotton nightgown and used a cotton towel under me and slept very well again. So grateful for that!
Thanks for your love and prayers—with God's help for strengthening me I'll get there.

  2. We don't see a lot of graupel, but get it once or twice a winter - usually early on in the season. I laughed when you said you're looking forward to 4-8 inches of snow. I groan at the thought of all that accumulation that I'll have to clear off the driveway and sidewalks.
The need for the extra training you took for your church duties saddens me. I do hope you never need to use the lessons you learned.

    1. You just never know these days and you can't hide from the world either. It's always good to be as prepared as you are able.

    1. We've always had patrols in the parking lot - but yeah they are stepping it up, which in a way is comforting to know.

  4. Such a pretty tree!
We have graupel a few years ago, until them I hadn't heard of it.
We do have security measures at church and I had to take part in some training because I help in the nursery.
It's sad, but a good idea to have it!

    1. Graupel is something I never knew about. I've not ever seen it before. We always get that hard hail that rains down heavy on the roof - but this stuff is fluffy and you don't hear it.

  5. I've never heard of the word graupel but have seen it. I've always called it frozen snow.
Yes, our church does have security measures. Our pastor has gotten death threats!

    1. Not just churches but any place people gather are soft targets they told us. Apparently all faith-based places are stepping up security measures; from the local Jewish shul, mosque and the Shik temple. It's better to be safe than sorry.

  7. What an interesting word. I don't know if we ever get anything like that.

I think what is happening is that there have been rumors about attacks against Synagogues by right wing groups in the United States. This could overflow into other denominations, and it is better to be ready in case it does happen. I know that churches here in Canada are getting ready for any spill over by our right wing nuts (Neo-Nazi).

In fact I no longer leave any door unlocked because of this scare.

    God bless.

  8. Well some of us learned a new weather term today. I also was not familar with graupel.
Sad state that our world is at right now. I remember one night a friend and I went to the movies, don't remember which one but it was more on the lines of a Chick Flick. This guy came in and sat close to us and as I was looking at him I thought why are you here surely you do not look like some guy that would come alone to this movie. I started thinking is this how some of these shooter incidents start? A few minutes later a woman came and joined him. I then relaxed and thought to my self how sad that the thought even entered my mind for those few minutes.
